Background of the study
Religious ceremonies are central to the cultural and spiritual life of the Yoruba community in Ibadan. These ceremonies often involve complex rituals, symbolic language, and sacred texts that require accurate interpretation to convey spiritual messages effectively. Interpreters play a pivotal role in Yoruba religious ceremonies by facilitating communication between clergy and congregants, particularly in multi-lingual or diaspora settings (Akinola, 2023). Their work ensures that religious practices and teachings are transmitted with fidelity, maintaining the integrity of cultural and spiritual traditions. The role of interpreters extends beyond mere language conversion; it includes the adaptation of religious symbolism and idiomatic expressions to ensure that the spiritual essence is preserved. Despite the critical importance of this task, interpreters face challenges such as varying levels of proficiency, contextual ambiguities, and the need for sensitivity to religious nuances (Oluwole, 2024). This study assesses the impact of interpreter-mediated communication in Yoruba religious ceremonies, exploring the strategies employed and the challenges encountered, with the goal of enhancing the quality and consistency of religious interpretation in Ibadan.
Statement of the problem
Interpreter-mediated communication in Yoruba religious ceremonies often faces challenges that compromise the clarity and spiritual integrity of the message. Inconsistencies in interpreter proficiency and difficulties in capturing culturally specific religious nuances can lead to misinterpretations that affect the ceremony’s overall impact (Akinola, 2023). These issues are further compounded by a lack of standardized training and evaluation for religious interpreters, resulting in varied translation quality (Oluwole, 2024). This study aims to identify these challenges and assess the role of interpreters in ensuring that Yoruba religious ceremonies convey their intended spiritual meanings effectively.
